Move to a new device

There are three ways to bring everything to a new computer or phone. Pick the one that matches how you use Sternway now.
You have a Sternway account
Section titled “You have a Sternway account”- Install Sternway on the new device (Linux, Windows, Android).
- Settings › Account & Sync › Log in, with the same server address, email and password.
The first sync downloads your hosts, keys, snippets and settings. If you forgot the password, choose Recover with a recovery kit on the same screen and use your kit’s key.
Some things stay on each device and do not come along: session recordings, the SSH config folder linked to ~/.ssh/config, CLI tokens, keyboard shortcuts marked “This device only”, approvals of port forwards and SSH agent settings. Keys and identities come along only if Settings › Security › Sync keys and identities is on (it is by default).
When you no longer use the old device, revoke it: Settings › Account & Sync › Devices › Revoke.
You use folder sync
Section titled “You use folder sync”Install Sternway on the new device, let your sync tool bring the Sternway Sync folder over, then Settings › Account & Sync › Sync through a folder, choose that folder and type the sync passphrase (Sync through a folder).
You use Sternway without sync
Section titled “You use Sternway without sync”- On the old device: export an encrypted backup file (Settings › Backups, the newest snapshot, Export; or on the desktop Settings › Import / Export › Export encrypted backup) and set a backup password.
- Copy the file to the new device.
- On the new device: restore it (desktop: Settings › Import / Export › Restore from backup; phone: Settings › Backups › Restore from a backup file) with that password.
See Back up and restore.
